My New Roles In The Civil War

Today I will be sharing with you a poem I wrote from the point of view of a Union Woman writing to her husband about her roles in the civil war.

Henry,

How are things back home? Are the children alright? I managed to get a job as a nurse helping the north. The conditions out here are horrific, seeing young boys coming into these makeshift hospitals with horrible wounds. Worst of all, is the diseases. The main way people are dying out here is from Typhoid, Smallpox, and Pneumonia. Despite the gruesome conditions, I know I am making a difference. However, I am constantly experiencing mistreatment with unequal pay, but that was expected. I just hope that this is over soon. I could never had imagined how bloody it is out here. They don't even bury their dead anymore, they just pile them up and leave them there since there is so many. The head nurse in the hospital I am at right now is Clara Barton, she is innovative and has amazing ideas. I know she is going places in the medical field. She had this idea of founding something called the "American Red Cross". I think she could be onto something amazing Henry. I am coming home soon, don't worry.

Love,

Sarah

P.S., Below I have attached a picture of the hospital I am working at.
