Sixty Acres

The protagonist Lee Waite in “Sixty Acres” by Raymond Carver is faced with making two important decisions. Two hunters sneak into his property illegally to shoot ducks; and Lee has to decide whether he will let them get away with it or go to face them. He then has to decide whether or not he will lease out some of the reservation to people wanting to hunt for cash to help his family, despite the fact he dislikes the idea.

He was fearful of the armed boys, since in the past men have been killed from defending their property; but he did what was right and defended his land and reinforced the law. This shows Waite is courageous; and that he stands up for what he believes in. He is in a money crunch, and his wife is constantly asking for new furniture, so Lee swallows his pride and decides he will lease the land. Overall, these choices illustrate how Lee Waite is a brave man with a big heart, who can sometimes be pushed into situations he doesn’t like. When I was younger, my parents asked me if I wanted to move to America or stay in London. I debated between the two wondering if I should stay with what was familiar or embark on a new adventure, and I decided to take a risk and move here; which shows I am courageous and willing to take a risk.

What I Would Leave Behind

Hey Guys:

In class we were hat container would we use. This assignment really interested me, because I love to think about the future, and what I would want people to remember about me. I would keep my items in a giant oyster shell, because on the outside I may seem one sided, however on the inside there is lots of ideas and "pearls" of wisdom I could share with the world. I would include pictures of me as a child, since I am a visual learner and I think a picture is worth a thousand words. I would include a small replica of the London Eye, since one of my most prominent memories as a child was going to the top and looking over the city, it was breathtaking. I will include some sheet music from my favorite song that I played in my piano recital, since piano is a great passion and I am so happy I have accomplished finding something I love. Finally, I would include a letter about being outgoing and kind, and taking risks since I would want my legacy to be giving insight on those in the future on how to live life to the fullest and take chances.
